How you can help prevent flooding in your area

Residents who own land with a watercourse running through it, along its boundaries or under it, have certain rights and responsibilities as a ‘riparian owner’.

A watercourse is any natural or manmade channel that water flows through and includes everything from rivers and streams to drainage ditches and dykes.

Riparian owners have the responsibility to look after the watercourse and make sure water can flow freely through it. That means keeping it free from silt and other blockages, and might involve cutting back trees and bushes, or removing fallen branches and other debris.

Being a riparian owner is an important role to help protect your own property, that of neighbours, and those upstream. Maintaining watercourses properly plays a crucial role in managing flood risk in your area – to find out more visit www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/flood-risk-management or email floodrisk@lincolnshire.gov.uk.
